Newport Boat Show Preview: Gunboat G4

Since I was one of the lucky ones to “fly” aboard the Gunboat G4 when it was first “launched” in St. Maarten last Spring, and there has been no shortage of footage of this remarkable foiling catamaran in action since then, it’s had to believe that its only making its boat show debut now.

But that’s the deal.

The Gunboat team has sailed the G4 all over the Caribbean–including a 1,500-mile delivery their North Carolina factory–and now they sailed it up to Newport for the show. And while you’ll have to see  the boat for yourself to really “get”what it’s all about these two photos will give you some idea.

The photo above shows the boat in full-foiling mode going about 25-knots or so. The photo below shows the very same boat in full chill mode on the hook. It even has a fridge and propane cooker!  How is that possible?

And while I can’t predict the future, something tells me that the line to check out this innovative orange catamaran starting tomorrow in Newport may be pretty long. But it’ll be worth the wait.

And as you can see from the video I shot in St. Maarten last spring, taking it out for a test “flight” will be even better.
