It may have been rainy. And cold. And the combination of ultra-light winds and ripping current may have forced an early stop to the “racing.” In fact, the “real” racing hasn’t even started yet (today was just a “practice” day). But, the stars have come out with a BANG here in the urban America’s Cup theme park that is Tribeca’s Hudson River waterfront. And we’re just getting started.
The Land Rover BAR boys got it going early with an ultra-moody Statue of Liberty off in the misty distance.
But the Artemis boys stayed on the right side of the course, avoided the mega-wind holes that form so close to 100-story buildings, came from behind, and even finished in style with some of the only real foiling I saw all day from the comfortable confines Land Rover BAR’s well-stocked hospitality boat.
But I gotta say, the up-closeness of it all was pretty sweet regardless and Sir Ben was all smiles once they called it for the day.
And the chance I had to spend true quality time with many Land Rover BAR’s brain trust, not to mention the first of their long list of celebrity 6th mans was pretty sweet too.
Uber heart throb Liam Hemsworth was first up!
But as you can see in this little video I shot, celebrity 6th man Alfie Allen of Game of Thrones really won us over on the hospitality boat after he did his bit on the back.

And I’ve heard there’s gonna be some pretty big celebs on board once the racing starts tomorrow. But for a ol’ softie like me seeking Sir Russel Coutts speaking (somewhat awkwardly) to a group of yellow-hat-wearing kids celebrating AC Endeavor Youth Day (and officially opening the event) caught my attention.
And seeing these 7th and 8th grade students, who were selected from Success Academy Charter Schools in Harlem to participate in this program to help kids learn about math and science through designing and building their own sails throw their hats in the air was a great capper to a great day in the urban America’s Cup theme park that is Tribeca’s Hudson River waterfront.
