What’s it like aboard this totally PREPPIE superyacht?

Superyachts are migratory creatures that follow the sun and the whims of their wealthy owners to enclaves of exclusivity all over the world. And the paradox is that some of the biggest yachts–the ones that are so big and opulent they can’t help be noticed–are owned by billionaires and celebrities who value privacy for themselves and their guests above all. These yachts say “I have arrived” so their owners don’t have to say…anything. As a result, most of us only get to stare from a distance and never really get to see what it’s like aboard a private yacht that’s big enough to accommodate helicopters, submarines, and even a sports car below decks.

But there are a few occasions when some of the largest yachts in the world come out to show their stuff to potential buyers (and buyers representatives). The Fall superyacht boat show season kicked off in Cannes and Monaco last month and continues here at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show early next month. And as you can see in these photos of the 5 largest yachts to be on display there’s really no limit to what’s you can do on a yacht—if you can afford it.

Northern Star

The 247-foot-long Northern Star offered by Moran Yacht and Ship was built by Lurssen in Germany and boasts a traditional superyacht appearance both inside and out. Large outdoor spaces provide tremendous area open air dining and lounging on six decks.

While the interior, designed by Pauline Nunns, might best be described as “classic country” or “Nantucket luxury.”

Now this is what I call “a stateroom with a view.” And unlike many superyachts that go big on gold-plated glitz, it’s a master stateroom that has enough white painted woodwork to make any New England preppie feel right at home.

Thanks to two powerful diesels, Northern Star can reach a top speed of 17 knots and has a range of 6,000 nautical miles

It’s also equipped with advanced sound and vibration limiting features guarantee an extremely quiet ride, while the hull is strong enough to stand up to harsh conditions. It also has a sophisticated stabilization system to provide maximum comfort both under way and at anchor.
